Golden Skull Painting Contest 2012

This past weekend Games Workshop's L.A. Battle Bunker (which is in Orange County) held their annual super-hobby-gasm weekend, which included the 3rd annual Golden Skull painting competition.  It's like the Golden Daemon, except that people like me actually have a chance to win a prize.  Speaking of which, my Saurus Calvary won first place in the fantasy regiment category and my Albino Suarus Lord won first place for fantasy singles.  I'm told I have some engraved trophies coming my way, how awesome!  The store did a great job of organizing the painting contest, which was more streamlined from the past two years.  More coverage can be found on the store's facebook page

Here's the overall winner, a murderous Wall-E:

2011 Golden Skulls Painting Challenge

This weekend the L.A. Battle Bunker held a "Hobby-Pocalypse" - a non-stop 33 hour event filled with painting competitions, mega-battles and mini-tournaments.  The festivities included their 2nd annual Gold Skulls Painting Challenge, the store's own version of the Golden Deamon.

Last year my Slann won 1st place for Fantasy Large Model and my Saurus hero won 3rd place for single fantasy figure.  This year I entered my Stegadon in the Vehicle/Monster category.  This year's competition was much tougher.  I took 3rd place after thinking I wouldn't even make the first cut.  Apparently, their was some heated debate about this particular category amongst the staff judging the event!

The staff put on a great event and it was fun to talk shop with all the great miniature painters.  You can check more coverage of the weekend at the store's facebook page.  I managed to get a few clear shots of some of the awesome models:

Golden Skulls Painting Competition at the L.A. Battle Bunker

On Saturday GW's LA Metro Battle Bunker held their own version of the Golden Deamon, the 1st Annual Golden Skulls painting competition.  Similar to the Golden Deamon, there were categories for both 40k and fantasy for single figure, units and large models as well as dioramas, kids and an overall award.  I entered my Slann (after spending the past week adding some extra highlights, glazing, etc), Saurus on Cold One and a 40k Ork Warboss.  The turnout was better than they expected and there were some amazing models present.  I hadn't planned on "covering" the event gonzo-journalist style, but wish I had.  The overall winner was a unit of 5 orc war boar riders, which could have won a Golden Deamon.  I only had my phone so I couldn't get some legitimate pictures of everything.
